Electricity consumption set a record 5 times in a row, the risk of power shortage is obvious

Solar power contributes to the supply of the national grid

On June 21, the national electricity consumption capacity exceeded 42,000MW for the first time and set a new peak at 42,146MW. This raises concerns about the lack of electricity in the near future...

Within 1 month, electricity consumption 5 times set a record

Over the past 1 month, there have been 5 times of electricity consumption that set a new record - this is an unprecedented amplitude in previous summers. In particular, in this June, up to 3 times the peak consumption was changed, on June 2, June 18 and June 21.

This raises the concern that there is a risk of power shortage, the power industry will have to alternately cut off at peak hours.

Typically, at noon on June 21, an urban area in Tay Mo ward (Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) issued a notice to residents about the temporary suspension of grid power supply from 11am to 2pm today (June 21). . This urban area must be powered by backup electricity to support residents.

Is backup enough to meet the risk of power shortage?

In fact, on May 31, 2021, the peak power consumption at 41,549 MW occurred at 10 p.m., which is nearly midnight - this is the time when no solar power is involved.

According to statistics of the National Load Dispatch Center (A0), the installed capacity of the entire power system is nearly 70,000 MW, of which about 17,000 MW is solar power.

Thus, in the absence of solar power, the installed capacity of the power source is only about 53,000 MW. However, this capacity level is only guaranteed when the input criteria are fully met and no factory has problems...

Meanwhile, in order to ensure the operation of the power system, it is necessary to meet the reserve level of 30-40% of peak capacity (equivalent to a minimum level of 12,643 MW). That is, the capacity of the whole system must reach a threshold of not less than 54,789 MW (in the absence of solar power).

Mr. Nguyen Van Vy - an energy expert - said that it is also the time when the water in hydroelectric reservoirs is low, and the heat makes the efficiency of coal-fired power plants worse than usual. Therefore, the available capacity of the whole system will be lower than 52,000 MW.

With redundancy close to peak power consumption in the evening, power cuts, or grid overload, are inevitable.

According to the explanation from the Ministry of Industry and Trade

The national capacity reserve rate by 2025, excluding renewable energy is only about 18%, making it difficult to arrange maintenance and repair schedules for power plants, especially at peak load times. in the evening and in the dry season.

In the North, the provisioning rate in 2025 is only 10%. Thus, in the period of 2023-2025, the North has almost no spare capacity and must receive support from the Central during the peak dry season or in case of repair and maintenance of power plants.

According to EVN's updated report on the balance of electricity supply and demand in the 2021-2025 period, in the event that power sources are behind schedule, renewable energy sources stop deploying after October 2021, the system will experience a large supply shortage. . The shortfall could reach 27.7 billion kWh of electricity by 2025.

Indeed, this is a difficult time for the management and operation of not only the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), but the whole electricity industry. The equipment is always carrying high load in a hot environment, just lack of inspection and supervision can cause a large-scale power outage.

In order to overcome the above situation, talking to Lao Dong reporter, Mr. Pham Le Phu - General Director of EVNNPT - said that in the past hot days, power transmission units have used many measures to ensure ensure the safety of power supply, from strengthening inspection, applying science and technology to emergency measures such as using water spray system to cool transformers in the hottest time of the day.

"These measures are manual, but in special circumstances, they are also highly effective," said Mr. Phu. At the same time, Mr. Phu said, he has directed the units to arrange and arrange labor in a reasonable way, to reduce the labor force for workers as well as prepare scenarios to cope with any situation. worst-case scenario.
